Here is my collection of certificates for mining companies, including coal, metals, peat and related companies. Mining is one of the most popular segments of Scripophily. However, Massachusetts ranks low on the list of states associated with mining, so most of the available material are for small local mines. I also collect mining stocks for companies incorporated in Massachusetts, even if its mines where located in another state. This happened frequently in the 19th century as locals would organize companies in the state and then travel to newly discovered mine fields in the west.
Peat was an important 19th century fuel source, and was still used widely in Europe as late as the 1950's. It cost me $40 to fill my truck with gas yesterday, so I thinking peat could make a comeback!
