Boston and Reese River Silver Mining Company. Here we have another example of a Massachusetts company financing a mining operation in the west. This time in one of Nevada's earliest and most significant mining regions, the Reese River District. It was discovered in 1862 and a "silver rush" began shortly after. By 1864, towns were built, including Austin which was the most significant, and an economy based on silver mining had been established. As with most mining towns, when the silver dried up, so did Austin. Only a few hundred people remained by 1890.
