New York and Boston Rail-Road Company. Chartered in 1846, this company made yet another attempt to connect Boston and New York by rail. Competitors made every attempt to block their efforts, especially at the Connecticut River, which the company planned to bridge. Construction was slowed, costs soared and finding additional sources of funds became difficult. In 1862, the state ordered an audit only to find that most records had been destroyed, a sure sign that management was pocketing corporate assets. Never the less the company continued until 1865, when it was bought by the Boston, Hartford, and Erie Railroad Company, having only completed its rails from Boston to the Rhode Island border in Woonsocket.
