Holyoke and Westfield Rail Road Company. Chartered in 1869 to carry passengers and freight from the mills in Holyoke to Westfield. Only 2,600 shares where authorized. 2,265 of those shares where purchased by the leading citizens of Holyoke including J.C. Parsons, Timothy Merrick, George W. Prentiss. The road was completed in 1871 and immediatly leased to the New Haven & Northampton Company, which ran the Farmington Canal. The railroad eventually became part of the The New York, New Haven and Hartford system.
