Boston Water Power Company. By the early 1800s Boston had grown to considerable size and the city began to look for a way to power the many gristmills in the city. They settled on plans to build a series of dams in the Back Bay to be used as tide mills. Two of these where the "Cross Dam" and the "Mill Dam". The Boston Water Power Company was formed to distribute the power from to the mills. It incorporated in 1832. The company acquired a lot of land in the area and ran a number of mills but heavy railroad building in the same region limited the water flow at the dams and the primary business of selling power was less than great.
In 1854, the company in large part funded the filling of Boston's Back Bay, which at that point in time was a giant cesspool for the city. The company appears to have done very well in its real estate transactions.
